Some earthquake swarms here are magma ripping the ground open.
On the Reykjanes Peninsula, earthquake swarms are not random - many trace magma pushing sideways through the crust as a sheet, called a dike. When a dike breaks the surface, an eruption follows. After 800 quiet years, this stretch woke up in 2021.
What is happening at Reykjanes Peninsula
Reykjanes is where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge climbs out of the sea onto land. The North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart here, so the crust is literally being stretched and cracked.
When magma rises and forces the crust apart as a dike, it sets off intense swarms and ground deformation. Iceland’s scientists use those signals to forecast, sometimes hours ahead, where lava may break out.
