Tsunami FAQ
Is there a tsunami warning right now?
This page lists every active tsunami warning QuakeMate is tracking from GDACS (global) and the US National Weather Service. If the list above is empty, there are no active tsunami warnings at the moment.
What causes a tsunami?
Most tsunamis are triggered by large, shallow undersea earthquakes that suddenly displace the seafloor. Landslides and volcanic eruptions can also cause them.
How are tsunami warnings issued?
Regional warning centres (like the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, JMA, and US NWS) and the global GDACS system issue alerts based on earthquake magnitude, depth, location and sea-level observations.
